In this novel, she depicts people who leave their homes, lose their possessions, and their friendly and family relations as well. They seek livelihoods, roof over their heads and security for themselves and their families in the new environments they find themselves in. Thanks to their resourcefulness, diligence and high moral values, they mostly succeed in obtaining good living conditions and make new friends with people from all over the world. The author has, so far, published the following: Kordun Reader, The Brave Health Inspector, Traces of Childhood, Child Abduction, Demands of the Heart, When the Tear Drops and Escape from Madness. In The Vortex of Life, she depicts fates of people from her home country who went through the demise of war in the nineties, those who remained in Kordun, as well as the others who went to Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, America, Switzerland… With an abundance of skill and empathy, the author describes the atmosphere of the period of war and its aftermath in that territory. In such conditions, a person cannot influence

their destiny which heavily depends on social events. Her characters have to deal with unease, powerlessness, prejudice, injustice… but also new hope. Milka Kajganic is both a nurse and a lawyer by education. She uses her medical knowledge in shaping and building her characters. One of the main protagonists of The Vortex of Life is Vaso, a physical therapist working in the spa on the Lake Constance. His wife Milena is a hardworking and devoted person who tends to keep the family together at all times. Their daughter Masha is a skilled and renowned nurse who works in Germany, and later, in Switzerland… Their son-in-law Dragan, Masha’s husband, is traumatized by the war and he doesn’t really cope well in the new environment (Germany). Despite everything, the family supports him and protects both his and the family’s dignity. With a lot of affection, she describes their life and cultural differences of people who find themselves in other countries. The depth of the experience, as well as the sensitivity that we find in this novel, embellish it with an exceptional value. Even though the author deals with the individual, there are also universal, human elements in the novel. Thanks to her skills and storytelling, the plot runs smoothly. The language is simple, concise, descriptive, suitable for the protagonist, conversational.

The everyday language, one could say, contributing to the convincing and plastic image of the characters. With the novel’s thorough idea and rhetorical questions, the author forms the characters within their relations to the world they live in. The novel’s special value lies in the heartwarming and kind human relations, regardless of the part of the world they come from. Milka Kajganic preserves the language, the scents and the colours of her homeland; she sheds light to the destinies and gives voice to the little people who live at the edges of historical events that historians do not write about.
Zorka Jekic

.. odlomak iz knjige...

Dogovor je pao između gospođe Heidi i fizioterapeuta Vase.
